The thicker the board the more it costs but the longer it will last. For hardwood finish flooring which average about 3 8 inch to 3 4 inch in thickness 1 2 inch to 3 4 inch thick plywood is the preferred subfloor though there are a variety of grades designed for. Cdx plywood should be a minimum of 7 16 inch thick. A thicker the veneer wears longer.

Quality installation of a plywood subfloor includes gluing the plywood panels to the floor joists with construction adhesive. Plank subfloors are usually made up of 3 4 thick x 4 8 wide southern yellow pine boards. Osb exposed during construction must be allowed to dry especially before installing sensitive finish materials such as hardwood flooring.

These planks are typically 1x6 pieces of wood that are nailed into the floor joists. The best and most common thickness of solid hardwood is 3 4 inch 19 mm. For engineered floors there are two components that make up the thickness the base layer or core and the veneer. Plywood subflooring also comes in 1 2 inch and 5 8 inch thicknesses.

For joists spaced more than 19 2 inches on center the minimum thickness for plywood is 7 8 inch and for osb 1 inch. The thickness needed for subflooring depends on the type of floor that will go on top and the primary purpose for the subfloor.
